Flutter, flutter butterfly,

Floating in the summer sky.

Floating by for all to see,

Floating by so merrily.

Flutter, flutter, butterfly,

Floating in the summer sky.

what to do…

  1. select three different food colourings. (I have used red, blue and yellow.)
  2. using a pipette, suck up and squeeze out little droplets of food colouring onto the butterfly blotting paper.
  3. leave to see what happens when the colours mix and spread to form a unique pattern.
  4. a beautiful butterfly to hang from the window.

then into a little dream adventure…

  • Look at the life cycle of a butterfly. Exploring words such as, egg, caterpillar, cocoon.
  • Read the wonderful story by Eric Carle ‘the very hungry caterpillar.’
  • Take a trip to London zoo and visit the ‘butterfly paradise’ area.
  • Looking at pictures of butterflies and discussing words like ‘symmetrical,’ ‘camouflage.’
  • Go outside into the garden and pretend to fly like a butterfly.
  • Maybe try some other simple butterfly art activities: for example, cut out a butterfly shape, paint on one side, then fold in half and open again to reveal a symmetrical butterfly! or make a butterfly masks!!!
