Take me back to the weekend where we rolled down grassy hills, wondered though leafy woodland, went on bear hunts…breathing in the fresh air, embracing the never ending views, rustling through autumnal woodland, collecting leaves of gorgeous oranges, reds and browns, conkers and their prickly cases, acorns and their smooth shells, broken sticks to make music with, and laughter and contentment to take with us as we face another week and all that brings with it. Amongst the Autumnal draw for being outside and exploring the natural world around us, we also had the need of being cosy indoors at the end of a day and for yummy treats. These delicious and very easy to make apple tarts were just what we needed to top off a beautiful weekend.

what you need…apple-tarts-3

  • 300g of ready made puff pastry
  • 2/3 eating apples
  • 1 table spoon of lemon juice
  • 50g unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • sprinkle of ground cinnamon
  • sprinkle of light brown sugar
  • pastry cutter
  • knife
  • baking paper
  • baking tray

what to do…

  1. preheat the oven to 200capple-tarts2
  2. roll out puff pastry to 1/2 cm thick and using your pastry cutter, cut the circles into the pastry and place the on a baking paper in a baking tray
  3. core and de-skin the apples and cut them very finely into slice, (adult help may be required with this) putting them into the bowl with the lemon juice and mix
  4. arrange the apple slices on top of the dough circles, then place a cube of butter onto each tart and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar to taste
  5. bake the tarts in the own for 20 minutes until golden brown
  6. serve hot or cold with ice cream or custard or just on their own – yum!!!

then into a little dream adventure…

  • apple crumble is also another lovely recipe to make with children
  • apple picking, go to an orchard and pick the apples from the trees
  • talk about the apple and the different parts of the apple: skin, flesh, core, pip
  • what would happen if you planted a pip? would an apple tree grow!!!
  • go to the supermarket, look at all the different varieties of apple – how do they differ? what colours are they? what do they taste like? which one do they like!!!
  • make apple juice with a juicer
  • counting with apples, using fruit to create simple math sums
