We always end up saving the cardboard rolls from the used up cling film or tin foil or kitchen roll or wrapping paper, and without a doubt, they usually end up being used for swords for the endless superhero role play that goes on in our household. However, this morning I was determined to change that, so I asked my eldest what else he could imagine making with a cardboard tube!!!

We got onto the idea of paint and scissors and glue and paper and the art experiment began!!!

snake1

what you need…

  • cardboard tube from the finished cling film or baking paper or tin foil or a kitchen roll tubesnake2
  • scissors
  • green paint and glue mixed
  • yellow paint
  • large piece of paper or card
  • boggle eyes
  • red cut out snake shaped tongue

what you do…

  1. this may require adult help as the tubes can be quite stiff or awkward
  2. paint each ring
  3. stick onto the piece of paper or card, one after the other, following along from one another to form the shape of a snake
  4. decide which end is the head end, and taking some boogly eyes, stick onto the head of the snakesnake
  5. find your little snake tongue cut out and stick it down onto the snakes head
  6. then, adding some yellow paint to your green, cover your kiddies hands in green paint
  7. make hand prints along the paper or card to make a grass effect
  8. taaaaadaaaaaaa!!!!

into a little dream adventure…

  • recognising ‘s’ is for snake, looking at the shape of a ‘s’ and tracing or writing it beside your art work…what else can you think of that begins with ‘s’?
  • looking at pictures of snakes, the patterns, the names, the size, are they big or small? which countries do you find certain snakes in?
  • go to the zoo and visit the snakes
  • thinking of other activities you could do with the painted tube rings?! maybe threading together, or making a caterpillar with them
  • rolling the rings through the paint and rolling them across paper
