We seem to be following on a little theme from last weeks creative ‘fern printing’ post, as it just seems nature walks in the late September sunshine is just how we roll these days…little adventures exploring the fields and parks and gardens, soaking up the last of those warm hazy days, as the seasons begin to change around us…

nature-walks

what you need…

  • a bag for collecting greenery
  • a selection of greenery found or picked
  • pair of scissors (ideally child size)
  • tray

nature-cutting-tray

what to do…

  1. collect as much greenery (ferns, grasses, leaves, sticks) on your nature walk as you like, and place in the bag, being aware of choosing a variety to create a more interesting selection for your tray
  2. lay your greenery out on a large tray once you are home
  3. allow your child to use the scissors to cut the greenery, thus exploring their hand/eye co-ordination and extending their concentration

into a little dream adventure…

  • with the cuttings from your nature tray, get some glue and paper or sticky back plastic and create a collage, maybe grouping the similar colours or textures together or just allowing a more freestyle collage to be explored
  • go on nature walks through the different seasons, what is different about the things you collect? talk about the changing of seasons and how the climate effects the outdoor environment around you, the change of colours, textures etc
  • discuss the names of each season and which months fall into which season? how do you feel in each season? what is your favourite season and why? what happens in each season?
